Sling TV vs DirecTV Cable: Which is better?

Sling TV and DirecTV Cable are both popular options in their respective realms. Cord-cutters flock to Sling because it gets you the most bang for your buck, while TV traditionalists like DirecTV because it's both comprehensive and uncomplicated. But they differ in many crucial ways, so we take a closer look at them below.

For the purposes of this review, we'll be referring to Sling's Orange + Blue plan, which costs $55/month, and DirecTV's basic cable plan, which costs $85/month.

Advantages of Sling over DirecTV Cable: price and flexibility

Never mind the $30/month difference between the two—unlike traditional cable packages, a live TV streaming service like Sling will have upfront fees. You don't have to worry about hidden fees or even taxes depending on where you live. Yes, DirecTV Cable's 2-year contract prevents the service from increasing its price during that time, but it's unlikely that Sling, which has branded itself as the economical TV option, will soar to DirecTV prices.

Sling is also contract-free, so you can cancel your subscription anytime you want. In comparison, DirecTV Cable will charge you $20 if you decide to cancel before the contract ends.

Advantages of DirecTV Cable over Sling: variety, a TV box, and price lock

The main advantage DirecTV has over Sling is variety. DirecTV has more than double Sling's channels, and that includes local networks and the option to add premium channels like HBO for a fee. Meanwhile, Sling only provides local channels where available. If your area isn't covered you'll have to buy an OTA antenna or purchase Sling's AirTV device. That's another DirecTV advantage: it already comes with a TV box, Gemini, so you don't have to worry about extra equipment.

The last advantage of DirecTV is its price lock. We know we said Sling's prices don't even come close to DirecTV, but there is comfort in knowing that despite inflation and price hikes, your DirecTV billing, at least, remains the same.
