Fandor Review

Streaming changed the landscape of film forever, but one of the ways it shifted the industry is transforming films as content rather than art. But there are some niche places that still honor the art form as so, and that’s Fandor. It’s the home of over 1,300 indie, foreign, award-winning, and classic films across multiple genres and across history, carefully curated by cinephiles, all at an affordable price.

What does it do differently?

Other streaming services do hold some indie films in their selection, but Fandor is one of the only ones that rookie directors can reach out to to debut their work on streaming. So, not only is Fandor great for film lovers– it’s also helping out independent filmmakers make their start as well.

What does it offer?

Out of plenty of other streaming services, Fandor is best known for its curation– prioritizing independent, foreign, award-winning, and classic films across genres and across film history. Some of these titles are even available for free, depending on your location, and you don’t need a subscription to access these free titles.

Why get it

If you’re tired of the same mainstream films and want to watch something new, Fandor is the streamer for you.

Who is it for

Fandor is made by independent film lovers and filmmakers, for indie film lovers and filmmakers.

Background

Fandor launched in SXSW 2011, but it wasn’t until 2021 in the same film festival that it pivoted to become a home for independent films and classics. Of course, the streaming service always held its roots in independent film, being under the leadership of former Sundance channel head Larry Aidem and former director of the San Francisco Film Society Ted Hope, but it was under The Film Detective president Philip Hopkins and Cinedigm that Fandor sharpened its focus.
