Misfortune (Mala fortuna) is a telenovela that doesn’t shy away from the genre’s goofy qualities. It’s predictable and a little bit ridiculous, but like most enjoyable soap operas, it knows how to draw you in and keep you invested in all the drama. Our protagonists are two peas in a pod: Julio and Victoria, ordinary people who seduce their way into scamming the ultra-rich family known as the Urquizas. Of course, their feelings (both for the family and for each other) get in the way of their schemes, but the resulting entanglement makes for a sexy and hilarious watch.
Synopsis
Michi and Marie Claire come face to face as they try to get close to the Urquiza family, one of the richest families in Mexico. There are no holds barred as to who comes out on top.
Storyline
The series follows Julio (Jorge López) and Victoria (Macarena Achaga), lovers-turned-enemies who are competing to infiltrate one of Mexico’s biggest family dynasties.
TLDR
This is further proof that it’s all right to overuse cliches as long as you have fun with them.
What stands out
The series, perhaps owing to its streaming partner Amazon Prime, has a high production value that makes it even more watchable. If it had less of the budget it has now, it might’ve been ironically good—enjoyable in a camp sort of way—but thanks to the tasteful cinematography, dynamic editing, and vibrant costumes and design that all highlight the beauty of Mexico, it stands as one of the most genuinely amusing shows on Amazon Prime right now.
