The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst2015

8/10
This deep dive into the baffling crimes of a wealthy heir doubles as a breakthrough in true crime and an excellent piece of investigative reportage

Anyone tired of the same old cliches found in true crime shows (and there are a lot of them) will feel reinvigorated watching The Jinx. Director Andrew Jarecki goes one step further from the usual fare by interrogating the subject, himself an unnerving character, and unearthing evidence that changes the trajectory of his story. The Jinx is a great true crime documentary in that it’s gripping and well-researched, but it’s also great television, point blank. It’s thought-provoking, unsettling, and strives to always keep the viewer at the edge of their seat.

Synopsis

Robert Durst, scion of NY's billionaire real-estate family, has been accused of three murders but has evaded justice for over 30 years. Durst speaks in this true crime series, revealing secrets of a case that has baffled authorities.

Storyline

An incisive and thorough look at the baffling case of New York realty heir Robert Durst, who was suspected of murdering his wife and best friend, and committed for the murder of his neighbor.

TLDR

If Kendall Roy was ever tried for his crimes, I imagine it would go down something like this.

What stands out

That bombshell season one finale, easily. But also, I can’t help but be amused at The Jinx and Succession’s similar title sequences. Ultra-rich boys and the things they get away with, amirite?
