31. Kita Kita (2017)

7.2

Country

Philippines

Director

Female director, Sigrid Andrea Bernardo

Actors

Alessandra de Rossi, Carolle Urbano, Empoy Marquez, Junpei Yamamoto

Moods

Dramatic, Romantic, Sweet

It’s uncanny how innocent love can resemble stalking and obsessiveness. We first see Lea’s (Alessandra de Rossi) perspective as she meets funny-man and friendly neighbor Tonyo (Empoy Marquez) out of the blue. Later, we see Tonyo’s perspective and follow his pathetic journey through the heartbreak that led to him shadowing and eventually speaking to Lea. By the time we see both perspectives, it’s too late to judge the surprising events that unfold. The premise seems simple: it follows a relationship that feels comically wrong as it involves a temporarily blind woman and a man who only develops his confidence from not being seen. But it comes alive thanks to the playful chemistry and casting of de Rossi and Marquez, who charm in this brilliantly self-aware Pinoy rom-com.

32. Go (1999)

7.2

Country

United States of America

Director

Doug Liman

Actors

AlgeRita Wynn, Breckin Meyer, Courtland Mead, D. Danny Warhol

Moods

Action-packed, Character-driven, Dramatic

Starting with Columbia Picture’s intro syncing into a rave, director Doug Liman’s sophomore feature Go instantly establishes its ecstatic energy– both in the hyper happy and drug-fuelled way– that made it a cult classic. All in one night, the dark crime comedy culminates in a wild Christmas Eve in three separate storylines: one with dissatisfied checkout girl Ronna, who needs fast cash, another with her drug dealer co-worker Simon going to Vegas, and the last with soap opera actors Adam and Zack, who want to get high while staying out of trouble. The cast is excellent, with witty quips and the twenty-something ennui of that generation, and each decision their characters make to feel good all turns Christmas Eve into a truly awful, yet terribly entertaining ride. While some of the humor is definitely dated, Go captures the insane chaotic energy just right before the new millennium.

33. Priceless (2006)

7.2

Country

France

Director

Pierre Salvadori

Actors

Annelise Hesme, Audrey Tautou, Blandine Pélissier, Charlotte Vermeil

Moods

Easy, Feel-Good, No-brainer

This easy French rom-com from 2006 is about Jean, a poor barman played Gad Elmaleh, who lies about his profession to date Irène, played by Audrey Tautou.

Irène has the habit of dating wealthy men to fund her lifestyle, she quickly realizes that Jean does not fit that description. Determined to do everything he can to win her over, Jean himself starts dating wealthy women.

Priceless, or Hors de prix, is a fun and light romcom with excellent lead performances.

34. Wicked Little Letters (2024)

7.1

Country

United Kingdom

Director

Female director, Thea Sharrock

Actors

Adam Treasure, Alisha Weir, Anjana Vasan, Cyril Nri

Moods

Easy, Funny, True-story-based

Is this the most thrilling head-scratcher we’ve seen in a while? No. Is it a rousing take on the feminist cause? Not really. But what Wicked Little Letters lacks in intrigue and relevance, it more than makes up for in entertainment value. Not that anyone needs convincing, but here Colman and Buckley further prove why they’re some of the most in-demand actors right now. They’re raw and fiery and hilarious, energizing every scene with their limitless energy. They make the film a breeze to watch, so if you’re looking to pass the time with enjoyable performances, Wicked Little Letters makes for a solidly entertaining watch.

35. Suncoast (2024)

7.0

Country

United States of America

Director

Female director, Laura Chinn

Actors

Amarr M. Wooten, Andrea Powell, Andrew Dicostanzo, Ariel Martin

Moods

A-list actors, Dramatic, Sunday

In Suncoast, writer-director Laura Chinn takes the personal tragedy of losing her brother to cancer and weaves it into something meaningful. The film is a sensitive meditation on death and grief, but it isn’t all grim. It’s also a coming-of-age story, one that focuses on Doris (Nico Parker), a version of Chinn’s younger self aching for normal teen experiences. The film is at its best when it zeroes in on Doris’ interiority and examines the duality of having to deal with so much death while still wanting to live a vibrant life. The surprising friendship that blooms between her and the popular kids as she chases after this life is one of the best depictions of authentic teen dynamics in recent memory. But the film is at its weakest when it tries to be something it’s not—that is, your usual tear-jerker indie fare that’s rife with lessons from a magical stranger (in this case played genially, but unnecessarily, by Woody Harrelson) and grievances from a grief-stricken mother (played powerfully by Laura Linney). To be sure, Harrelson and Linney (especially) deliver top-notch performances, but they feel shoehorned in an otherwise pitch-perfect film about a girl finding her place in the real world.

36. Big Time Adolescence (2020)

7.0

Country

United States of America

Director

Jason Orley

Actors

Aiden Arthur, Brielle Barbusca, Emily Arlook, Esteban Benito

Moods

Funny, No-brainer

This low-stakes coming-of-age movie stars SNL’s Pete Davidson as Zeke, an aimless college dropout. His best friend, Monroe, is still in high school and is much younger and more innocent. Monroe doesn’t realize that he has a very biased outlook on life through Zeke, as he starts drug dealing, partying, and dating according to rules that are not his own.

Big Time Adolescence tries to be a statement on destructive friendships but doesn’t fully succeed. Its true value is that it’s a movie that you can turn your brain off to, and those rarely come with statements.

37. Walking and Talking (1996)

7.0

Country

Germany, Italy, UK

Director

Female director, Nicole Holofcener

Actors

Alice Drummond, Allison Janney, Amy Braverman, Anne Heche

Moods

Grown-up Comedy

As Nicole Holofcener’s directorial debut, Walking and Talking stands out not only for its honest dialogue and wonderful performance from the young Catherine Keener, but also for its portrayal of female friendship in a genre which too often portrays mindless cliches. The movie focuses on two best friends as one of them gets engaged and the other fears their friendship is getting lost in the middle of the excitement around her friend’s marriage. Catherine Keener does a brilliant job as the likable but depressed friend and Anne Heche does an equally as good job playing her sympathetic half. A great movie if you’re in the mood for something sweet, honest and sometimes sad.

38. Dil To Pagal Hai (1997)

7.0

Country

India

Director

Yash Chopra

Actors

Akshay Kumar, Ameesha Patel, Aruna Irani, Deven Verma

Moods

Easy, Lighthearted, Romantic

The concept of a soulmate– the idea that there is someone out there that you’re meant to meet, who’s been made for you to be with, and vice versa– has inspired plenty of romance stories. Dil To Pagal Hai is one such musical centered on the idea. There are some flaws, especially with the love triangle, but the stacked cast, the classic soundtrack, and the elaborate, gorgeous dance numbers are just so enthralling to watch. There’s an interesting thread with the way the two leads’ lives mirror each other even before they meet, as well as the way the film contemplates the decades’ anxieties over crafting the modern woman, which makes Dil To Pagal Hai not perfect, but iconic nonetheless.

39. Goyo (2024)

7.0

Country

Argentina

Director

Marcos Carnevale

Actors

Balthazar Murillo, Cecilia Roth, Diego Alonso, Nancy Dupláa

Moods

Character-driven, Discussion-sparking, Heart-warming

This film is immediately charming and spends ample time taking you through the mind of Goyo, to where you see where the wheels start turning in his head for each new interaction. It captures his infatuation, obsession, discomfort, and panic, without overdoing or over-explaining anything. Goyo himself (Nicolás Furtado) is an excellent heart of the show with his friendliness and sincerity, but stealing the show alongside him are his and Matute’s (Pablo Rago) solid sibling dynamic and Saula’s (Soledad Villamil) ice cold confrontation skills when you get to see it. It’s a very sweet film that avoids being cheesy, and I imagine Goyo himself would find this movie to be decent if he saw it.

40. Sound of Noise (2010)

7.0

Country

Belgium, Denmark, France

Director

Johannes Stjärne Nilsson, Ola Simonsson

Actors

Anders Jansson, Bengt Nilsson, Fredrik Myhr, Irene Lindh

Moods

Easy, Funny, Quirky

When a group of percussionists illegally carry out a city-wide performance act, it’s up to policeman Amadeus Warnebring to stop them. The musical fugitives perform on stolen objects and disrupt public spaces, but Warnebring has his own reasons to pursue them so determinedly: he’s tone-deaf for one and born into a family of snobby musical geniuses for another, making this case all the more meaningful and consequential to him.

Sound of Noise is more than reminiscent of Stomp, what with its playful symphonies subsisting on random borrowed objects, but it is livened up with the suspense of a caper, the dry wit of a Swedish comedy, and the abundant charms of a light romance.
