Action movies can get a bad rap for being shallow or brainless (which isn’t always a bad thing), but there really is an artistry to getting action right—making sure it flows coherently, looks beautiful, and carries narrative or emotional weight. On Netflix you can find a huge number of action films, though many of them might only be good for a quick fix or a background watch. So for this list below, we’ve put together a number of lesser-known movies that we believe have gripping, well-made action, while also still being strong films in one’s own right.

11. Wingwomen (2023)

7.2

Country

France

Director

Female director, Mélanie Laurent

Actors

Adèle Exarchopoulos, Annick Roux, Aurélien Gabrielli, Camille Verschuere

Moods

Action-packed, Character-driven, Dramatic

An all-female action comedy that doesn’t get self-serious about the way it’s subverting the genre — Wingwomen feels like a breath of fresh air. It wisely grasps that plot isn’t paramount for a movie like this, and so it joyously dunks on cerebral scenarios with its unabashedly silly story convolutions, like when its professional thieves take a brief pause from their momentous One Last Job™️ to sail to Italy and exact bloody, flamenco-delivered revenge on the gangsters who killed their beloved rabbit. Exotic Mediterranean location-hopping isn’t the only way Wingwomen milks Netflix’s finance department for all it can get, either: director-star Mélanie Laurent also packs in all manner of stunts, from spectacular base-jumping sequences to dramatic drone shootouts.

For all its breezy style, though, there is real heart here, and not the kind that feels crafted by an algorithm. It’s true that a late twist unwisely uses the movie’s embrace of implausibility for emotional ends, but otherwise, the relationship between its professional thieves — ostensibly platonic but very much coded otherwise (a la Bend It Like Beckham) — has surprisingly sincere warmth. Thanks to the cast’s natural chemistry and characters that feel human despite the ridiculous plot, Wingwomen is much more moving than you might believe possible for a Netflix action-comedy.

12. Snatch (2001)

7.0

Country

UK, United Kingdom, United States of America

Director

Guy Ritchie

Actors

Adam Fogerty, Ade, Alan Ford, Andrew Shield

Moods

Action-packed, Funny

Snatch is all things great. The film strings together multiple plots with a great ensemble of actors – which turns it into an excellent thriller movie. Jason Statham leads the film with Brad Pitt close behind, both turning in performances of enormous physicality. You’ll recognize many actors in the film as well, but the acting is not the only area where this movie shines. The style, quick cuts, and narration will surely keep you on your toes and engaged.

13. The Black Book (2023)

7.0

Country

Nigeria

Director

Editi Effiong

Actors

Ade Laoye, Alex Usifo Omiagbo, Bimbo Akintola, Bimbo Manuel

Moods

Action-packed, Character-driven, Intense

When the system messes with you personally, it’s such a powerful fantasy to be able to settle things with your own hands. To be strong enough to retaliate, and once things are settled, to be strong enough to be left alone, not to be messed with. The Black Book depicts this revenge fantasy, reminiscent of Liam Neeson’s Taken, albeit with corrupt police. The Nigerian action thriller isn’t afraid to go hard, with threats of splitting a person in half by a table saw, dramatic shoot-outs, and fight sequences. However, what makes the thriller work is that all these action sequences are intended to be the reckoning of corrupt institutions. There are some messy parts, certain shots that included some bad takes. Despite this, The Black Book still proves to be entertaining enough to forgive these mishaps.

14. Blood Vessel (2023)

7.0

Country

Nigeria

Director

Moses Inwang

Actors

Alex Budin, Bimbo Manuel, David Ezekiel, Dibor Adaobi

Moods

Action-packed, Challenging, Character-driven

Pollution disproportionately affects developing nations, and when governments continue to allow the lackluster waste management processes of large-scale industries, sometimes the only option is to leave. That’s what the six protagonists do in Blood Vessel, though escaping the situation isn’t as easy as it sounds. The first half starts out fairly slow, as we get to know the group, but it’s all to bring about emotional devastation as the film unfolds into violent ends. While certain plot elements don’t have a neat resolution, and certain technical aspects sometimes feel distracting, Blood Vessel works through the strength of its six lead performances.

15. Kingdom (2019)

7.0

Country

Japan, United States of America

Director

Kim Seong-hun, Shinsuke Sato

Actors

Bae Doona, Heo Jun-ho, Jeon Seok-ho, Ju Ji-hoon

Moods

Action-packed, Dramatic, Thrilling

Of course, as a serialized medium with plenty of volumes, it isn’t easy to condense manga into movies. Many a title have let down fans before, especially with the notorious live action curse. But there are some films that capture the energy and excitement of the original, and one such film is Kingdom. Not to be confused with the Korean Netflix show, the Japanese film is a thrilling depiction of the Chinese history-inspired story, with excellent choreography, elaborate sets and costumes, and all the battle scenes expected from the adaptation. It’s not particularly deep, and they really brush over Shin’s loss in favor of much more swordfighting, but it’s not bad if all you’re looking for is epic action in historical dressing.
