There’s a classic male character trope of stoic guys that don’t seem to be fazed by anything. Play It Cool, Guys has an ensemble cast of four of these cool characters, but they aren’t quite put together as others might think. While on the outside, they seemingly handle setbacks easily, the show’s short vignettes and corresponding internal monologues reveal their relatable day-to-day clumsiness. The contrast makes these characters feel so endearing, more so as they get to know each other. As the show progresses with their friendship, the series feels like kind reassurance for all clumsy people out there.
Synopsis
Despite their distinctive personalities, Souma Shiki, Hayate Ichikura, Shun Futami, and Takayuki Mima all have one thing in common: though naturally clumsy, the four disguise their embarrassment from tiny slip-ups by maintaining a composed demeanor. However, it is actually the guys' airheaded natures that makes the girls' hearts throb. No matter what happens in their daily lives, the boys do their best not to lose their cool!
Storyline
Four guys from different walks of life strike a friendship, formed from their shared clumsiness.
TLDR
Same.
What stands out
Also known as Cool Doji Danshi, the slice-of-life miniseries understandably doesn’t have any unique, never-before-seen situations, but the vignettes depict each sequence in such a short and sweet way. With only 11 minutes allotted for each of the 24 episodes, the series has to win its audience over in such a short amount of time. The show does it through its excellent economy of story. While slice-of-life might not be to everyone’s taste, fans of the genre might find a quick and sweet treat in this comedic josei anime.
