Belladonna of Sadness is a controversial film. Just by reading the synopsis, you can already tell that the film wouldn’t be easy to watch, given the multiple instances of sexual violence inflicted on Jeanne by the baron and the rest of the village. But it’s clear that the violence is meant to feel uncomfortable. This disturbing folklorish tale depicts the terror of one’s life torn apart at the whims of the rich and powerful, whose authority were granted by the church and state. And this terror is showcased in striking, psychedelic imagery that strikes hard at the tangled knot of feelings around sex and ambition, as Jeanne tries to reclaim her sense of self again and again after trauma. It’s hard to pin down Belladonna of Sadness, but it truly is a unique film that fascinates even today’s viewers.

What stands out
The graphic imagery definitely draws opinions across the board. Some people do find it gratuitous, but there are others who would find it cathartic. Either way, there’s no denying that the art is beautiful.
