The leaves have been falling for quite a while now, but there’s still enough time before the season ends to get cozy, cuddle up, and slip under the blankets to watch these fall favorites. Of course, we already know you might already be aware of the classic autumn films like Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting, so we made sure to find other movies that fit the season based on the setting and overall vibe. For viewers looking for some fall suggestions, here’s our best picks to watch this autumn (and for all autumns ahead).

21. The Wedding Banquet (1993)

7.2

Country

Taiwan, United States of America

Director

Ang Lee

Actors

Ang Lee, Dion Birney, Gua Ah-leh, Hannah Sullivan

Moods

Easy, Lighthearted, Lovely

Even with a plot that wholeheartedly embraces the tropes of a fake marriage and of found families, The Wedding Banquet never falls into the trap of histrionic melodrama. There’s a calmness to this film that’s made all the more poignant by how none of these characters are truly right or wrong, good or bad. Everyone is just trying to stay in their lane while nurturing the little bits of happiness they can find. The Wedding Banquet is a relatively early example of a lighthearted gay romance and an American co-production that’s incredibly sensitive about representing Taiwanese culture properly on screen.

22. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)

7.0

Country

France, Germany, Turkey

Director

Tomas Alfredson

Actors

Amanda Fairbank-Hynes, Arthur Nightingale, Benedict Cumberbatch, Christian McKay

Moods

Slow, Thrilling, Well-acted

A slow-burning spy thriller set within the British intelligence service during the height of the Cold War, this complex drama is highlighted by Gary Oldman’s acutely understated performance. As a high level agent brought out of retirement to ferret out a mole within the MI5, he exudes intensity and intellect with unerring precision. The story itself is exceptionally complicated and yet highly engaging. I felt that casting and corresponding screen time made it clear whom the mole would turn out to be…but you may disagree.

23. The Daytrippers (1997)

7.0

Country

Canada, United States, United States of America

Director

Greg Mottola

Actors

Adam Davidson, Amy Stiller, Anne Meara, Campbell Scott

Moods

Easy, Funny, Grown-up Comedy

By all appearances, Eliza and Louis have a charming marriage. They’re casual and good-humored in the morning and full of passion in the evening. So when Eliza finds a love note addressed to her husband one day, naturally, she freaks out. She enlists the help of her eccentric family and sets off to Manhattan, where they all try to get to the bottom of the affair; what follows is an endearingly awkward adventure around town.

Though the film often meanders both in plot and dialogue, the expert ensemble keeps things compelling with their convincing chemistry and wry, visual humor. Coupled with lush images of ‘90s New York and brilliantly droll writing, The Daytrippers is a joyride of a film, as unassuming as it is enthralling.

24. The Beauty Inside (2015)

7.0

Country

South Korea

Director

Baik

Actors

Bae Hyun-kyung, Bae Sung-woo, Baek Seung-hwan, Choi Yong-min

Moods

Dramatic, Emotional, Feel-Good

When we love a person, most of us are convinced that we love them for their personality, and if we truly love them, love would remain even if their beauty fades away. The Beauty Inside, a Korean remake of the 2012 American interactive Internet series, challenges this notion. As Woo-jin’s body changes regularly, he’s unable to live a normal life because of a lack of a consistent appearance, a lack of a visual reference point that allows him to be recognized by the people he loves. While more can be explored with the premise’s metaphysical elements, and Woo-jin’s characterization is mostly a neutral, blank canvas, The Beauty Inside is still a sweet, feel-good romance that makes the impossible feel wonderfully possible.

25. It Follows (2014)

6.9

Country

United States of America

Director

David Robert Mitchell

Actors

Alexyss Spradlin, Bailey Spry, Carollette Phillips, Charles Gertner

Moods

Raw, Thrilling

This movie is distilled horror. A teenager sleeps with her boyfriend for the first time, after which he tells her that he was the latest recipient of a curse that is transmitted through sexual contact. After she becomes completely paranoid without any manifestations, the curse manifests itself in assassins that kill their way to her. A genuinely creepy film that’s also very smart.
