Following a grueling five-week shift at an Alaskan oil refinery, workers led by sharpshooter John Ottway are flying home for a much-needed vacation. But a brutal storm causes their plane to crash in the frozen wilderness, and only eight men, including Ottway, survive. As they trek southward toward civilization and safety, Ottway and his companions must battle mortal injuries, the icy elements, and a pack of hungry wolves.
The take
Liam Neeson has become one of those names that are used to perfectly describe any film he is starring in. In The Grey, things are different. Of course there is a more than enough amount of adrenaline-charged action, edge-of-your-seat thrills and catchphrases only worthy of a film where Neeson fights wolves for survival after a plane crash (a scenario that conveys more badass-ness would be hard to find) - but behind all that is a gripping, deep, and thoughtful drama.
The Grey is like taking a plane, having everything go perfectly, and then being upgraded to business class. You'll get the action you signed up for, but you'll also be offered a deep and interesting story. Hopefully your plane won't face the same faith as the one in the movie.
