Killer Book Club (2023)

4.6

A unimaginative Spanish slasher with all the bells and whistles from its much better predecessors

TLDR

If you want to watch something "like" Scream, there are six movies in the franchise. Just stick to that.

What it's about

A group of horror-loving friends are stalked and killed by a mysterious figure after a costume prank goes wrong.

The take

As far as slashers go, Killer Book Club is a painfully run-of-the-mill entry. After a clown prank goes wrong, ending with a dead professor, a group of "horror-obsessed" friends are stalked by a killer clown. But, as they die - forgettably - one by one, the accusations are comically baseless,  and the lacking tension dissipates because at no point do you doubt who will make it to the end. The overall result is underwhelming since there's no new take or critique on the numerous, poorly executed horror tropes littered throughout an already unimaginative plot.

What stands out

Killer Book Club tries to set itself apart by having the main cast as literature students in a horror book club (though many of them noticeably dislike horror). The writers even go so far as to have a lecturer admonish the horror genre for being cheap and contrived (prophetic, much?). But, their knowledge of horror is just a footnote, as are the several mentions of coulrophobia (fear of clowns) that never comes into play afterwards.
