From the country that gave us classic characters like Sherlock Holmes and James Bond also comes a tradition of noir, crime films, and suspense movies that are frequently referred to collectively as thrillers. In the UK—and on Netflix UK, in particular, these films have taken on every form, from hardboiled police procedurals to spy movies and working class social thrillers. But common to most, if not all, of them is a sense of danger or dread, and a certain level of deception or craftiness so the heroes can get what they need. These lesser-known but highly rated thrillers available on Netflix UK should give you that and more.

40. The Nightingale (2018)

7.1

Country

Australia

Director

Female director, Jennifer Kent

Actors

Aisling Franciosi, Anthony Phelan, Baykali Ganambarr, Ben McIvor

Moods

Challenging, Dark, Depressing

From The Babadook director Jennifer Kent comes another horror, although this one is more about the horrors of humanity. Set in 1825 Tasmania, The Nightingale follows Irish settler Clare as she seeks bloody revenge on the monsters who wronged her and her family. She teams up with an Aboriginal guide named Billy to accomplish her goal.

Because of its often violent and disturbing tone (the film is rated R for its potentially triggering scenes), The Nightingale understandably polarized audiences upon its release. But it’s also an excellent conversation piece, best watched with friends or anyone up for a discussion-filled movie night.

39. Kill The Messenger (2014)

7.2

Country

United States of America

Director

Michael Cuesta

Actors

Andy Garcia, Barry Pepper, Dan Futterman, David de Vries

Moods

A-list actors, Thrilling, True-story-based

Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker, The Town, Arrival) plays Gary Webb, a journalist in investigating the American government’s possible involvement in cocaine trafficking in Latin America. Based on a true story, it’s in the same vein as other recent movies on investigative journalism. Jeremy Renner’s performance is the main reason to watch this movie. Even as the story spins into deeper levels of complexity, he remains a coherent, steady point of reference. It was his chance to prove to directors that he can carry a big-budget movie and he nailed it.

38. Detroit (2017)

7.3

Country

United States of America

Director

Female director, Kathryn Bigelow

Actors

Alexander Cook, Algee Smith, Andrea Eversley, Anthony Mackie

Moods

Depressing, Intense, Tear-jerker

John Boyega, Algee Smith, and John Krasinski star in this difficult portrayal of the Detroit 1967 riots, the biggest civil unrest in American history before the 92 L.A. protests. A murderous cop, a band on the verge of breaking big, and a hard-working security guard find their fates intertwined by the events that took place that summer. Detroit blends real-life images with its storytelling. It would be a perfect movie if it wasn’t for a scene in which the police brutalize young Black men for finding them in a hotel with two White girls. This scene, while a necessary part of the story, is overstretched and feels almost sadistic, more so because the film was made by a White director, Kathryn Bigelow.

37. The Endless Trench (2019)

7.3

Country

Canada, France, Spain

Director

Aitor Arregi, Jon Garaño

Actors

Aitor Arregi, Antonio de la Torre, Antonio Romero, Belén Cuesta

Moods

Challenging, Character-driven

This historical drama opens with one of the most thrilling chase scenes in recent memory, as Higinio Blanco, the man at the center of the story, escapes government forces during the Spanish Civil War.

He goes into hiding that, without him realizing, would last 33 years. He would only emerge in a government amnesty in 1969, as would many like him across Spain.

Themes of love (Higinio was confined with his newlywed wife), solitude and fear are at the center of a story that remains thrilling even when it goes through the isolation years.

36. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)

7.3

Country

Ireland, U, UK

Director

Yorgos Lanthimos

Actors

Alicia Silverstone, Anita Farmer Bergman, Barry G. Bernson, Barry Keoghan

Moods

A-list actors, Weird, Well-acted

This is a really weird movie starring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman. They play a wholesome and well-off couple where Farrell is a heart surgeon. The movie starts with him taking care of a teenager called Martin, who’s not related to him or seems to have any real connection with him. It later turns out that Martin shares a special bond with the surgeon, a bond that will threaten his family in unexpected ways. The camera work and direction by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Favourite) offset the weirdness to offer an intriguing experience.

35. Kilo Two Bravo (2014)

7.3

Country

UK, United Kingdom

Director

Paul Katis

Actors

Ali Cook, Andy Gibbins, Benjamin O'Mahony, Bryan Parry

Moods

Raw, Suspenseful, Thrilling

Kilo Two Bravo (Originally named Kajaki) is a must-watch for anyone who likes war dramas. It tells the true story of British soldiers in the Afghanistan war who find themselves trapped in a minefield during a mission, with their rescue team coming in a helicopter that might set off mines if it lands. It’s a slow, dialogue driven film that is interested in taking you to the war zone more than it cares about entertaining you. Ultimately, it becomes an essay on the horrors of war, and an anti-war war film. Because of this and given the blood and gore, this movie is definitely not for those who would feel nauseated at sight of blood. Great setting, good cinematography, realistic acting and script all do justice to the true story. It’s a film that will grip your senses and keep you at the edge of the seat throughout.

34. The Bank Job (2008)

7.3

Country

Australia, UK, United Kingdom

Director

Roger Donaldson

Actors

Alistair Petrie, Alki David, Andrew Brooke, Angus Wright

Moods

Suspenseful, Well-acted

A thrilling and fun film about a British working class bunch who find themselves in confrontation with the rich and powerful. This happens when their once-in -a-lifetime job lands them not on ly the expected money and jewelry, but documents with big secrets. The phrase “the good version of Jason Statham” applies not only to the actor but to the whole film – as it is enjoyable like all similar heist movies but adds that sadly forgotten thing called character. If you liked The Italian Job, The Town, or even films like Argo; you will love The Bank Job.

33. Hereditary (2018)

7.4

Country

United States of America

Director

Ari Aster

Actors

Alex Wolff, Alexis Long, Ann Dowd, Ari Aster

Moods

Intense, Thrilling

A chilling and dark movie to be especially appreciated by true suspense lovers. At the funeral of the family’s matriarch, no one is emotional except the granddaughter, whose grieving is disturbing, to say the least. When both grieving and not grieving are unsettling, you can tell what kind of family (and movie) this will be.

32. Eye in the Sky (2015)

7.4

Country

d, UK, United Kingdom

Director

Gavin Hood

Actors

Aaron Paul, Aisha Takow, Alan Rickman, Armaan Haggio

Moods

A-list actors, Thought-provoking, Well-acted

Is an innocent child’s life worth millions of other civilian casualties? In a modern-day drone warfare led by Colonel Katherine Powell, played by the very versatile Helen Mirren, she is conflicted to order the target of the Somali terrorist organization when she spots Alia, a young girl who just happens to be selling bread within the premises of the Kill Zone. Her icy exterior, however, is a far cry from Lieutenant General Frank Benson’s profound sympathy, the portrayal of the late Alan Rickman in his last onscreen role being one of his most remarkable ones to date. Eye in the Sky is a thriller that will have you questioning your morals while gripping your seats in what appears to be a battle of the best choice and the only one. Do the ends always justify the means?

31. A Cop Movie (2021)

7.5

Country

Mexico

Director

Alonso Ruizpalacios

Actors

Leonardo Alonso, Mónica Del Carmen, Raúl Briones

Moods

Challenging, Character-driven, Discussion-sparking

In the Mexican film A Cop Movie, director Alonso Ruizpalacios mixes fact and fiction, documentary and narrative, to tell the tale of Teresa and Montoya, two police officers whose dreams are dashed by the corruption of their trade and who, eventually, find love and comfort in each other.

Ruizpalacios takes thrilling risks in structuring this genre-bending story—cutting stories into parts, jumping back and forth between the harrowingly real and captivatingly non-real. For all the experimental maneuvers he makes, however, the through-line is always Teresa and Montoya: particularly, their love for each other and for an institution that should have, in an ideal world, supported them and the people they vowed to protect.

To its credit, instead of merely humanizing the controversial police force, A Cop Movie adds some much-needed nuance to the big picture. At the end of the day, they’re no different than any other underpaid laborers working desperately to make end meets. A Cop Movie doesn’t gloss over the fact that the police, like so many other workers, are stuck in a rotten system that’s long overdue for a major overhauling.

Curated by humans, not algorithms.
