This had me yearning for a countryside childhood I never had.
What it's about
After failing to pass the national teacher qualification exam, Hye-won leaves Seoul to return to her childhood rural hometown, to an empty house, and to the small garden her mom used to tend to.
The take
For many young people, moving into the city is the dream they want to achieve because of more opportunities, more excitement, and, sometimes, because they want to escape from their parents and the town that they feel they outgrew. For many people, this move is permanent, but for some, this move can be alienating. Little Forest is centered around a woman who returns to her hometown, after she left it in her mother’s departure, but while remembering the past was painful, returning to the town reminded her of the good that she has taken for granted– the fresh food, made by her own hands, the self-sufficiency, and the mindfulness she had when not having to chase after the approval and status of urban society. Little Forest captures the beauty of countryside living in such a calm and relaxing way.
