TLDR
It doesn’t get any more quirky than “Canadian maple syrup heist.”
What it's about
A Canadian maple syrup farmer is pushed to her limits when regulators buy off her land. She partners with a security guard and mobster to sneak out barrels of the syrup without suspicion.
The take
The Sticky takes its time to find its tone, so the first few episodes can be a slow watch (even though they only run for 30 minutes each). But once everyone’s been introduced and we’re mainly focused on the crime at the heart of the show, it’s immediately enjoyable. Character actor Margo Martindale finally gets her due here, stealing the spotlight with unmatched gusto in every scene she’s in. The premise is also funny itself: how can the maple syrup trade be so dark and violent? But it can be, and so the show is darkly funny when it treads that line. Most of it is a standard cat-and-mouse chase between low-key criminals and police officers, but it’s elevated by Martindale and company.
