Dating Amber 2020

An Irish comedy-romance with a smart twist

Our Take (by Bilal Zouheir)

This lovely comedy-romance from Ireland is about a closeted gay teen and his lesbian schoolmate who pretend to be in a relationship to avoid being bullied at their school.

This premise makes Dating Amber an original story in a genre in which that’s increasingly rare. This is added to the setting, in 1995 rural Ireland, which is executed to gorgeous perfection in everything from the clothes to the music.

Dating Amber ends up being more coming-of-age than a comedy-romance. It’s a tale of friendship and self-acceptance.

Notable Critics

"Finally, Freyne has given us a romantic comedy in which the gay best friends are the leads, and it's all the richer for it."

— Guy Lodge

Synopsis

Eddie and Amber decide to stage a relationship in order to stop everyone speculating about their sexuality. Eddie is keen to follow his dad into the military, while Amber dreams of moving to the liberal hub of London. The plan seems solid, but as their arrangement begins to fall apart, Eddie’s denial gets deeper as Amber realizes that a perilous future awaits her best friend unless she intervenes.

I know films outside of US are great too. it’s just I am lazy and really have to look .. but I think when they are listed with similar tag or themes films do receive visibility.
