Deep Cover is an undercover cop thriller, but there’s something distinctly noirish about the way the operation proceeds. With Laurence Fishburne coldly narrating his side of the story, this crime thriller is full of choices for Agent Stevens to agonize over, as much as there is gunfights and car chases. It gives this crime film a grounded perspective. As the higher-ups from both the police and drug underworld push him to do their bidding, Fishburne deftly portrays Stevens being torn between maintaining the cover, the people affected, and his own personal principles. What he witnesses may be the stuff of many 90s crime thrillers, but the perspective he shows makes it timeless.
