Freedom Writers 2007

Our Take (by Renee Cuisia)

Based on a true story, Freedom Writers follows Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank), a new teacher tasked to educate a class of at-risk students in a racially divided community. By encouraging expression, empathy, and ambition, Erin helps them navigate and even go beyond the prejudice and violence that have long defined their experience. Though it sounds like your run-of-the-mill teacher film, Freedom Writers will move you to tears thanks to compelling performances and gutting real-life stories. What it lacks in originality, it more than makes up for in heart. The film is directed by Richard LaGravenese, who also penned the award-winning The Bridges of Madison County and Behind the Candelabra.

Synopsis

A young teacher inspires her class of at-risk students to learn tolerance, apply themselves, and pursue education beyond high school.
