Redline 2009

The galaxy races in this visually striking animated adventure

Our Take (by Isabella Endrinal)

When it comes to the story and worldbuilding, Redline offers what you would expect from Saturday morning cartoons. The titular competition itself is just Formula 1 with sci-fi tech, and it doesn’t really examine the potential consequences of said tech, other than how cool it would look competing against humanoid aliens across the entire galaxy. That being said– it really does look cool. This animated adventure looks so different, taking on the style of vintage high contrast comic book print combined with the computer graphics new to the time. Each turn, each fight, and each explosion feels like it’s been added because of how good it looks, but it makes for some of the most visually striking shots of the 21st century.

Notable Critics

"One of the most visually spectacular toons in recent years."

— Richard Kuipers

Synopsis

A daredevil driver is determined to compete in Redline, the most popular race in the galaxy. The race only occurs every five years, but in order to participate he must overcome the mafia, the government and even love.
