TLDR

Wait, is that Mariya Takeuchi, the singer that sung sleeper hit Plastic Love?

What it's about

After a week’s worth of bad luck, Haru decides to shift jobs and work at the Pokémon Resort, where people and Pokémon can rest and rejuvenate from their day-to-day lives.

The take

Pokémon is one of the world’s most popular franchises, and it’s mainly centered around the idea of cute, colorful creatures with special powers to be caught, trained, and put into battles. Pokémon Concierge is a different side to the franchise, but instead of the high-octane action and world-ending fights, the four-episode series contemplates the idea that maybe these cuddly creatures need to rest too. As anxious newbie Haru adjusts to the laidback, paradisal resort, and acquaints herself with felt-fabric versions of the familiar cartoon creatures, Pokémon Concierge is an excellent reminder to enjoy yourself once in a while.

What stands out

Sometimes, totally fantastic creatures look eerie when transformed into a different medium. The jump from 2D to 3D can turn cute features into weird ones, and the added dimension often encourages unnecessary detail for a sense of realism. Thankfully, Pokémon Concierge lands the mark in transforming the classic cute creatures. Their features stick close to the original line art, but each creature instead gets their added dose of detail through variations in texture, shine, and smoothness, keeping in line with their respective type and designs. This simple approach matches up with the show’s clear reminder to relax and have fun, making Pokémon Concierge a perfect watch while on vacation.
