Who Were We Running From? 2023

A lavish Turkish mystery where paranoia is constant for a mother-daughter duo

Our Take (by Isabella Endrinal)

Fear and paranoia are the hallmarks of plenty of thriller series, but Who Were We Running From? takes this paranoia on a whole other level. Based on a 2007 novel, the Turkish mystery series is centered around a mother-daughter duo with a codependent relationship. Flitting from hotel to hotel, what’s normal for Bambi is an unhealthy bond with her mother, to the point where they personally believe that it’s them against the world. Yet, on some level, as they attract scrutiny, this paranoia feels almost justified. Through cinematic visuals, contrasts between them and everyone else, and near silence from the mother’s perspective, Who Were We Running From? creates a compelling mystery that stands out from other crime series available on the platform.

Synopsis

Hiding a mysterious past, a mother lives like a nameless fugitive with her daughter as they make hotels their home and see everyone else as a threat.

More about it

What happens

Living life from hotel to hotel, the young Bambi sticks close to her constantly vigilant, ever worrying mother.

What sets it apart

Who Were We Running From? is able to maintain its mystery, mostly because its running narration starts from Bambi’s point of view. Bambi seems to believe that her lavish lifestyle, living from hotel to hotel, just seems to be a simple quirk, and to be fair, that’s all she knows. However, we know, from the series’ first ever scene, that something’s suspicious about the mother, given that the police raided a whole hotel for her. Starting the narration from Bambi’s end, and contrasting her casual demeanor with her mother’s coldness and the reactions of people around her, creates a very intriguing mystery from what’s being left out from what is said.

TL;DR

This mother-daughter duo clearly needs therapy. Watch this with subtitles, not the English dub.
