I ♥ Huckabees 2004

Our Take (by The Staff)

Jason Schwartzman plays an environmentalist who teams up with a fireman (Mark Wahlberg) to tackle their metaphysical woes and the meaning of existence. Together they employ an ‘existential’ detective couple (Dustin Hoffman and Lilly Tomlin). I ♥ Huckabees is whip smart and funny, gleefully skewering being and nothingness with equal aplomb. Adults are more likely to enjoy it, as it pushes the boundaries of the “funny without being dull” genre to new limits.

Notable Critics

"I ♥ Huckabees is a rarity-a tremendously optimistic film for a truly dark time."

— Gavin Smith

"As with Russell's other films, Huckabees moves its audience from initial bafflement to a broader apprehension of a situation rife with complexity."

— Ben Walters

Synopsis

A husband-and-wife team play detective, but not in the traditional sense. Instead, the happy duo helps others solve their existential issues, the kind that keep you up at night, wondering what it all means.
