The Bloody Hundredth 2024

A straightforward but still educational documentary about the brave Air Force unit that went head-to-head against Nazi Germany

Our Take (by Renee Cuisia)

The Bloody Hundredth was produced as an accompaniment to fellow Apple TV+ production Masters of the Air, and it shows. In writing and editing, it doesn’t feel grand enough to stand on its own despite having big stars like Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg come in and lend their presence. That said, it’s still a compelling story, made even more valuable by the real-life heroes who recall their experiences onscreen. This, plus the rich archival footage that accompanies them, is what makes an otherwise straightforward documentary well worth watching.

Synopsis

Meet the real-life airmen who inspired Masters of the Air as they share the harrowing and transformative events of the 100th Bomb Group.

More about it

What happens

Narrated by Tom Hanks, this documentary takes a deep dive into the 100th Bomb Group and the bloody sacrifices they made to win a crucial battle in World War II.

What sets it apart

It’s pretty sad that even documentaries now have to add a spoiler warning before they start. I blame all of you, Marvel fans.

TL;DR

Tom Hanks does not have one unpatriotic bone in his body, and it’s genuinely amazing how he hasn’t been dragged for it yet.
