What happens

Jesus, a humble Judean carpenter beginning to see that he is the son of God, is drawn into revolutionary action against the Roman occupiers by Judas -- despite his protestations that love, not violence, is the path to salvation. The burden of being the savior of mankind torments Jesus throughout his life, leading him to doubt.

What the critics said

Notable Critics

"The movie is generally powerful and fresh. It's fiercely, dauntingly exotic, yet familiar at the same time, and the Crucifixion, experienced by a man who suffers as we do, is terrifying."

— David Denby

"Only when the film arrives at the last temptation does Scorsese come into his own as a concentrated and purposeful storyteller, and the ending is very nearly powerful enough to justify the vagaries that preceded it."

— Jonathan Rosenbaum
