The Platform 2019

If Parasite was too tame for you

Our Take (by Bilal Zouheir)

The Platform is the closest thing to Parasite released so far. This interesting Spanish movie is about 90% a science-fiction drama and 10% a horror movie. It’s an allegory set in a future where prisoners live in vertical cells, and each cell has to wait for the cell above it to eat to get food. Depending on the floor where prisoners wake up, they might not get any food at all. This creates for disturbing situations that are hard to see as not representative of our modern societies.

Notable Critics

""The Platform" is not a subtle film. But these are unsubtle times, with unsubtle problems, and the most alarming thing about this grimly affecting Spanish allegory... is that it sometimes doesn't seem like an allegory at all."

— David Ehrlich

"A film with multiple impressive twists given its limited setting, and each of them casts a new light on how the movie is supposed to reflect society."

— Brian Tallerico

Synopsis

A slab of food descends down a vertical facility. The residents above eat heartily, leaving those below starving and desperate. A rebellion is imminent.

Comments

  1. Not a “good” movie but entertaining if you’re in the mood for a sci-fi horror.

  2. General opinion seems to be that this movie is smart because it is a cynical capitalist allegory. It really has nothing to say, and doesn’t work as a decent movie on its own thanks to unmotivated character choices and image planting with no payoff. Fake deep garbage.
