Supa Team 4 2023

A vibrant Zambian animation brimming with Black Girl Magic

Our Take (by Kerine Wint)

Vibrantly and energetically led by a lively quartet, Supa Team 4, though not wholly original, is still a refreshing children’s animated show. There is a slightly new take on the dynamics: a leader with a sense of justice, an intelligent yet shy caregiver, a level-headed athlete, and a hot-headed food lover. It keeps the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle quartet formula interesting.

With episodic villains (leading to the big bad in the shadows), the show reveals the double lives of our teenage protagonists while exploring the neo-futuristic rendition of Zambia’s capital and a surprising focus on socio-political and environmental issues. It’s a series that takes intelligent, talented Black girls and empowers them to be themselves, even as they save and protect.

Synopsis

Four teens are just trying to survive secondary school when an ex-spy recruits them for her superhero team. Their newest assignment? Saving the world.

More about it

What happens

Four teenage girls in a futuristic Zambian city are recruited by a retired secret agent to save the world from evil.

What sets it apart

Given the progression in CGI animation, the show looks smooth and simple, letting the colors and landscapes shine. But the best part of this super magical-girl animation is the transformations! Nothing beats a good transformation sequence with close shots, infectious music, and exciting transitions. Seeing their suits, hair, and devices come to life with their unique vibes and dances are always fun.

TL;DR

A great reminder that you NEED a playlist whenever you're getting ready!
